Olivia is deeply interconnected with her own personal perception of landscape. With a particular focus on native flora, Olivia’s work strives to capture the moments of complete and wholesome oneness experienced during the discovery and re-discovery of natural curiosities. Drawn to the Banksia form, she explores the natives’ heterotelic nature – to have the purpose of somethings existence or occurrence outside of, or apart from itself.
Olivia Gates is currently in her 3rd year of a double degree of Visual Arts and Design at The Australian National University School of Art and Design. She enjoys working in a wide variety of materials, including textiles, ceramics, bronze, sculpture, gold & silver, digital art and is currently majoring in glass. Olivia finds inspiration in both traditional and contemporary Japanese Art, and is looking forward to six months exchange at Kyoto Seika University in 2019.
